Băneasa vs. Otopeni: which pick-up location suits you
When you fill in the online booking form and reach the “pick-up location” step, you will see three options: Bucharest, Otopeni and Băneasa. For most customers the answer is obvious straight away — if you are landing on a commercial flight, you choose Otopeni. But some situations are less clear-cut: you are arriving on a private flight, you already live in the north of the capital, or you simply don’t know what “Băneasa” actually means when it comes to car rental. It is not an airport that has disappeared from the map, as many people think, but an area with a very specific role.
In this article we go through both locations step by step: what they are, who they are for, how far they are from central Bucharest and from the ring road, and, most importantly, how to choose the right one for you in under two minutes. Spoiler: the fleet and prices on our fleet page are exactly the same whichever location you choose, so the decision is purely about your logistics, not your budget.
Otopeni (Henri Coandă) – Romania’s main air gateway
Henri Coandă International Airport, popularly known as “Otopeni” after the town where it is located, is the only airport in the Bucharest area that handles scheduled commercial flights. This is where Wizz Air, TAROM, Ryanair, Lufthansa, Turkish Airlines and the other airlines you use for a city break or a holiday land and take off. With more than 14 million passengers a year before the pandemic and traffic that has recovered steadily since 2022, Otopeni is in practice the point of entry for the vast majority of tourists and business travellers who arrive in Romania by air.
The airport is about 16–17 km north of central Bucharest, on the DN1 (the Bucharest–Ploiești road), with direct access to the capital’s ring road. From the Arrivals terminal you can be on the ring road in a few minutes, which makes Otopeni a convenient starting point both for heading into the city and for setting off straight towards Ploiești, Brașov or the seaside without driving through city traffic.
Logistically, picking up the car at Otopeni usually means meeting us in the short-stay car park area or at a point agreed during the confirmation call you receive right after sending the online booking form. For step-by-step details on getting from the terminal to the car, the recommended times and the most common mistakes first-time visitors make at this airport, we have a dedicated guide: the complete guide to car rental at Otopeni Airport. You can also find out more on our Otopeni car rental page.
Băneasa – from Bucharest’s first airport to private aviation and a northern district
Few people know that Băneasa was actually Bucharest’s first civil airport — Aurel Vlaicu Airport, opened in the interwar period and used as the capital’s main airport until the 1970s, when commercial traffic gradually moved to Otopeni. Today Băneasa is an airport for general aviation: private jets, charter flights, helicopters and flying-club aircraft. If you booked a flight with a business aviation operator or stepped off a private jet, you most likely landed here, not at Otopeni.
At the same time, “Băneasa” is also the name of one of the best-known areas in the north of Bucharest — a residential district with villas and new developments, next to Băneasa Forest, the Bucharest–Ploiești road and the well-known Băneasa Shopping City mall. Locals often come here for shopping, running in the forest or business meetings, and it is a few kilometres from Herăstrău, Pipera and Aviației — districts full of company headquarters and office buildings.
In practice, if you already live or work in the north of the city — Pipera, Aviației, Herăstrău, Băneasa — picking up the car at our Băneasa location saves you real time, even if you didn’t fly in there. It is simply the closest location to your home or office.
Who should choose each location – 4 real situations
There is no “better” option in absolute terms — only the right one for your situation. Here is what the four cases we see most often at booking look like:
- You are arriving on a commercial flight (Wizz Air, TAROM, Ryanair, Lufthansa, etc.) — choose Otopeni, it is the airport where you actually land.
- You are travelling by private jet, charter or business helicopter — choose Băneasa, the terminal dedicated to private aviation.
- You live in or already have meetings in Pipera, Aviației, Herăstrău or Băneasa — choose Băneasa to save time, however you arrived in the city.
- You need to meet someone right at the arrivals gate or need direct access to the airport terminal — Otopeni has a commercial terminal, while Băneasa is more of an airfield with restricted access.
Real distances to the centre and access to the Bucharest ring road
The difference in distance between the two locations isn’t huge, but it matters at rush hour. From Otopeni to University Square (Piața Universității) it is about 16–18 km, which takes 25–40 minutes depending on traffic; from Băneasa the same destination is only 9–11 km away, so 15–25 minutes in normal conditions. The difference is most noticeable in the morning and late afternoon, when the Bucharest–Ploiești road is congested all the way from Otopeni.
As for the ring road, both locations have good access: Otopeni has its own exit straight onto the ring road, ideal if you are heading on to Ploiești, Brașov or the A1/A3 motorways without entering the city at all. Băneasa is also a few minutes from the northern ring road, but it is more of a gateway into the city than to the motorways that bypass Bucharest. If you plan a mountain route or a trip to the seaside on day one, Otopeni may be slightly more practical; if you are staying in the city for at least the first night, the difference disappears completely.
The fleet and prices are exactly the same, whatever the location
Whether you choose Otopeni, Băneasa or our central Bucharest location, you have access to the same fleet — from economical cars such as the Dacia Logan and Fiat Tipo to the Skoda Scala, Skoda Octavia, Renault Megane and Seat Toledo, the Opel Astra with automatic gearbox, the Opel Insignia and Ford Mondeo saloons, the Hyundai Kona SUV and the 7-seat Opel Zafira. You can see all available cars on the full fleet page.
The same goes for the price: the online booking system automatically calculates the rate for your dates and shows the final price straight away, with no deposit. The pick-up location doesn’t change the final price by a single cent; it only affects how convenient it is for you to get to the car.
Not sure which to choose? Here is how to decide quickly
If you are still torn between the two, the simple rule is this: for a standard commercial flight, choose Otopeni by default — it is the right choice in more than 90% of cases. Book Băneasa only if you know for sure that you are arriving by private or charter aviation, or if you already live or work in the north of the city and simply want the nearest pick-up point.
If you are still unsure, don’t fill in the form at random — you can call our team before booking, and in any case, after you send your online booking request, you will get a confirmation call during which you can change the location without any problem if your plans have changed in the meantime.
A question we hear often is whether you can pick up the car at one location and return it at another — for example, picking up at Otopeni when you arrive and returning it at Băneasa before a private departure flight, or the other way round. The answer is yes: it is a normal option and involves no extra formalities compared with a standard booking. Just enter the two locations in the form or tell us on the phone, and our team takes care of the rest. This is especially useful if you are combining a holiday with a business trip and flying back differently.
Choose the location that suits you — Bucharest, Otopeni or Băneasa — and fill in the online booking form in under two minutes: you will see the exact final price, with no deposit, before you confirm anything. And if you would like to compare the available cars first, take a look at our whole fleet and choose the right model for your route.
October 2026 update: choosing between Băneasa and Otopeni depends mainly on the airport you land at and where you are heading next. At Skycar you can pick up at one location and return the car at the other if that is more convenient for you.
